Today I sat down on the couch and read an entire book (this is not too uncommon for me but today I had season one of Psych on dvd calling my name), anyways I read The Devil's Arithmetic by Jane Yolen. It's about a young Jewish girl (Hannah, whose Jewish name is Chaya) who thinks that her families Jewish traditions are boring and doesn't understand why they must always remember, until she travels back in time and lives the life of the girl she is named for (Chaya, her great aunt's friend). It just so happens that the day that Hannah travels back to is the day before Chaya and her family are sent to live in a Concentration camp. One would have to ask: how would you act if you knew about the atrocities that were about to befall everyone around you? In Hannah's case she learns that it is not what happens but that you remember what happened and the people that it happened to. They might die but at least there was someone to remember them.
