The Cinderella tales are generally understood to fall into two categories. What are they and what are the primary differences you see between the two categories?
The two versions of Cinderella are Cinderella tales and Catskin tales.
The Cinderella tales all feature a stepmother as the villian and most have either an absent/powerless father figure. These Cinderellas have domestic slavery and 'ugliness' force upon them by the wicked stepmothers. The offer up an exceedingly passive heorine who is content to wallow in servatude and wait for someone to save her.
The Catskin tales however are very different, for starters the mother dies at the beginning of the tale and makes the father promise to marry only if he can find someone who is just like her. This of course is nearly impossible for the father to do, until that he realizes that his own daughter is the only woman who can compare to his late wife; thus it is the mother who dooms her daughter and not a wicked stepmother. These Cinderellas are very active characters who volunteeraly take on disguise which hides their beauty and in fact makes them appear hideous. These Cinderellas are also in charge of their own fate, they do not sit around in domistic servatude and wait for prince charming, instead that run away and make a living for themselves.
On a completely unrelated note I am elated to discover that I now get the Lifetime Movie Network!!!!! Yeah, great movies all the time!
